Let’s Dive Into The Chicken Coop Essentials!

    1. Nesting Boxes

Nesting boxes are a vital component of any chicken coop, serving as designated spaces for hens to lay their eggs. Providing nesting boxes offers several benefits for both the chickens and their keepers. Firstly, nesting boxes provide a secluded and comfortable environment for hens to lay their eggs, which helps reduce stress and encourages consistent egg production. By offering a quiet and private space away from the main coop area, nesting boxes mimic the natural nesting instincts of chickens, promoting a sense of security and well-being among the flock.

Furthermore, nesting boxes help protect eggs from damage and contamination. With a dedicated nesting space, eggs are less likely to be laid randomly around the coop, reducing the risk of breakage or being trampled by other chickens. Additionally, nesting boxes help keep eggs clean, as they provide a clean and dry surface for eggs to rest until they are collected by the keeper. This not only ensures the quality and freshness of the eggs but also simplifies the task of egg collection, making it easier for chicken keepers to maintain a hygienic and efficient coop environment.

    2. Roosting Bars

Roosting bars are essential features of any chicken coop, serving as elevated perches where chickens can rest and sleep during the night. Providing roosting bars in the coop offers numerous benefits for the health and well-being of the flock. Firstly, roosting bars help chickens feel secure and comfortable, as they mimic their natural instinct to perch off the ground while sleeping. Elevated roosting positions allow chickens to escape potential predators that may lurk on the ground, promoting a sense of safety and reducing stress levels within your flock.

Moreover, roosting bars help maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the coop by keeping chickens off the floor during the night. By perching on roosting bars, chickens avoid direct contact with bedding material, reducing the likelihood of feces contamination and disease transmission. This helps to keep the coop environment cleaner and healthier, ultimately leading to better overall flock health.

Additionally, roosting bars encourage natural behaviors in chickens, such as social bonding and hierarchy establishment, as they often prefer to roost close to each other. Providing adequate roosting space also ensures that all chickens have a comfortable place to rest, promoting harmony and well-being within the flock.

Most well-designed chicken coops will come with roosting bars already installed. But if you’re going the DIY route, 2×4 lumber makes great roosting bars.

*IMPORTANT TIP* Roosting bars should be HIGHER than your nesting boxes. If your nesting boxes are higher, that is likely where your chickens will sleep, which would result in dirty and broken eggs.

    3. Automatic Chicken Coop Door

Whether free-ranging or in a run, chickens need to make their way back to the chicken coop at dusk. It is such a hassle to have to go out the chicken coop every evening at sun-down, and then let them out every morning. Plus, this task puts a real damper on your social life! Having an automated chicken door makes your life a lot easier, and your chickens a lot safer. This door from Run Chicken is battery operated, and super easy to install. (They also have a solar powered version)

    4. Coop Camera

Having a camera in your chicken coop can be incredibly beneficial for several reasons. Firstly, it allows chicken keepers to keep a close eye on their flock even when they’re not physically present, providing peace of mind and reassurance, especially during times of potential threat such as predator activity or extreme weather conditions. (Also great for doing nightly headcounts when you’re on vacation, or out for the night!)

Additionally, a coop camera enables keepers to monitor the health and behavior of their chickens in real-time, allowing for early detection of any signs of illness or distress. This proactive approach to chicken care can significantly improve the chances of successful intervention and treatment, ultimately leading to better overall flock health and well-being.

Furthermore, a coop camera can serve as a valuable tool for educational purposes, allowing keepers to observe and learn more about chicken behavior, social dynamics, and daily routines. Whether for security, health monitoring, or simply for the joy of observing their feathered friends, a coop camera offers invaluable insights and benefits for chicken keepers of all levels of experience.

    5. First Saturday Lime

Sprinkling First Saturday Lime in your chicken coop offers numerous benefits for both the chickens and their keepers.

First Saturday Lime acts as a natural and effective way to control pests such as mites, fleas, and flies, which can pose health risks to chickens and cause discomfort. Its alkaline properties create an inhospitable environment for these pests, helping to prevent infestations and promote a healthier coop environment.

Additionally, First Saturday Lime helps to reduce moisture and odor by absorbing excess moisture and neutralizing ammonia, thus mitigating the risk of respiratory issues and creating a more pleasant living space for the chickens. Moreover, this eco-friendly product is safe to use around both humans and animals, making it an ideal choice for chicken keepers who prioritize the well-being of their flock and the environment.

Overall, sprinkling First Saturday Lime in your chicken coop is a simple yet effective way to enhance cleanliness, comfort, and overall health for your feathered companions.

It’s also great to sprinkle in your chicken’s dust bath! It’s a common alternative to diatomaceous earth, which also keeps pests away, but is commonly believed to cause respiratory issues in chickens.

    First Saturday Lime
    • Protect Garden from Intruders-Use First Saturday Lime to safeguard your plants. Dust them for protection or apply around them directly.
    • Protect Homes and other Buildings- Apply First Saturday Lime around homes, garages, and buildings to deter insects such as ants, mites, ticks, and cockroaches.
    • For Ticks in Yards -Use as a lawn insect deterrent by using a yard spreader on the lowest setting, spreading 1lb of First Saturday Lime per 20 sq ft across a lawn for prevention of fleas and ticks.
    • Freshen & Deodorize Barns & Coops-Utilize First Saturday Lime to repel insects from chickens, eliminate chicken odors, and reduce moisture in the chicken coop by sprinkling 1/8 inch across bedding. It can be applied on top of or under mats.
    • Monthly Organic Pest Barrier- A healthy alternative for insect management. Just pour around your home’s base monthly for safe and effective control.

    6. Bedding

Bedding is one of the most basic of chicken coop essentials. There’s multiple chicken coop bedding to choose from.

    1. Medium-Coarse Sand:
      • Pros:
        • Excellent drainage, keeping the coop dry.
        • Easy to clean and maintain.
        • Doesn’t harbor pests like mites or mold.
      • Cons:
        • Initial cost may be higher than other options.
        • Heavy to handle during setup and maintenance.
        • Requires regular raking to prevent waste buildup.
    2. Pine Shavings:
      • Pros:
        • Absorbent, helping to keep the coop dry.
        • Pleasant odor.
        • Can be composted after use.
      • Cons:
        • Some chickens may try to eat them, leading to digestive issues.
        • May be more expensive than other bedding options.
        • Needs regular replenishing to maintain cleanliness.
    3. Pine Pellets:
      • Pros:
        • Highly absorbent, expanding when in contact with moisture.
        • Easy to clean and manage.
        • Can help control odor in the coop.
      • Cons:
        • May be more expensive than traditional bedding options.
        • Some chickens may be hesitant to walk on them until they break down.
        • Pellets may contain additives or chemicals depending on the manufacturer.
    4. Coffee Bedding:
      • Pros:
        • Rich aroma can help mask odors.
        • High absorbency.
        • Eco-friendly option, often made from recycled coffee grounds.
      • Cons:
        • Availability may be limited depending on location.
        • Can be more expensive than other bedding materials.
        • Needs regular replacement to maintain effectiveness.
    5. Hemp Bedding:
      • Pros:
        • Highly absorbent and provides good insulation.
        • Natural antimicrobial properties.
        • Lightweight and easy to handle.
      • Cons:
        • May be more expensive than traditional bedding options.
        • Availability can vary depending on location.
        • Some chickens may be hesitant to nest on it initially.

Each type of bedding has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to consider factors such as cost, availability, absorbency, and comfort for your chickens when making a choice.

    7. Ventilation

Ventilation plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and comfortable environment within a chicken coop. Adequate airflow is essential for regulating temperature, humidity, and air quality, all of which directly impact the well-being of the flock. Proper ventilation helps to prevent the buildup of moisture and ammonia from chicken waste, reducing the risk of respiratory problems and infections.

Additionally, good ventilation helps to dissipate heat during hot weather, preventing heat stress and ensuring that chickens can regulate their body temperature effectively. Conversely, in cold weather, ventilation helps to prevent condensation and frostbite by maintaining a dry and draft-free environment. Furthermore, ventilation assists in removing dust

    8. Hardware Cloth

Hardware Cloth is a critical chicken coop essential for making your coop and run predator resistant! Remember…chicken wire is designed to keep chickens IN, NOT to keep predators OUT! Predators such as fox and racoons can very easily break through chicken wire and take out your whole flock surprisingly quickly! Be sure you’re using 1/2 inch hardware cloth to secure your coop and run openings.

You’ll also want to dig a trench around your run and bury the hardware cloth at least 12 inches deep, create a “skirt” surrounding the run to keep digging predators away from your flock.

    Galvanized Hardware Cloth
    • Half inch hardware cloth, ideal for snake fence, chicken wire, opossum rehab cages, chicken coops run, rabbit fencing, flower beds, wide gutters guard, fruit trees, vegetable garden, to keep out small critters such as voles, gophors, racoons, etc.
    • The holes are only 1/2 inch to keep critters out and the chickens / rabbit safe, protect your garden fruits and vegetables from rodent animals. The 1/2 inch openings would have to be really small to get through. In the area of Wisconsion and Colorado.

    9. Good Locks

Make sure your chicken coop has at least a 2-step lock on the coop and run doors. The general rule of thumb is if a small child could figure out the lock…so can a racoon! They are surprisingly smart animals, and can do a lot of damage to your flock (including death) in a short amount of time. So keep those little suckers out of your coop with a good lock system!

    10. Feeder

Another obvious chicken coop essential is a feeder. But not all chicken feeders are created equal! You want a feeder that holds a good amount of food so you aren’t having to fill it every single day. This also comes in handy if you go away for a short vacation. Also keep in mind that if the chicken feeder isn’t designed well, the food will constantly get contaminated with feces, bedding, mold, etc. All of these things could cause a lot of health issues with your flock.

The RentACoop 10lb feeder is a perfect pick for flocks of up to 12 adult chickens. It also comes with an innovative anti-roosting cone to prevent your chickens from roosting on top of the feeder.

    13. Nesting Pads

Nesting pads provide a clean and comfortable surface for hens to lay their eggs, reducing the likelihood of eggs becoming soiled or damaged. The soft and cushioned texture of nesting pads helps to mimic the natural nesting materials found in the wild, encouraging hens to lay eggs in designated nesting boxes rather than in random locations around the coop. Additionally, nesting pads are highly absorbent, helping to maintain optimal moisture levels and cleanliness within the nesting boxes. This not only promotes better egg hygiene but also makes egg collection easier for chicken keepers. (They also make reusable ones)

    14. Run

Having a chicken run alongside your coop is a must. A chicken run offers a designated outdoor space where chickens can safely explore, forage, and exercise, promoting physical and mental well-being. By allowing chickens access to fresh air, sunlight, and a variety of natural elements, such as grass and insects, a run encourages natural behaviors and reduces boredom and stress within the flock. Moreover, a chicken run helps to protect chickens from potential predators and prevents them from wandering off into unsafe areas. Additionally, by confining chickens to a run, it minimizes the risk of them damaging gardens or neighboring properties while still allowing them to enjoy the benefits of free-ranging.

    15. Chicken Coop Enrichment Toys

Chicken toys, such as hanging treat dispensers or boredom busters, offer opportunities for enrichment and stimulation, preventing boredom and encouraging natural behaviors. These toys can keep chickens entertained and engaged, reducing stress and aggressive behaviors within the flock. Additionally, interactive toys that dispense treats or require pecking and scratching can promote exercise and improve dexterity and coordination in chickens. Furthermore, toys can serve as environmental enrichment, offering chickens opportunities for exploration and problem-solving, which can enhance their cognitive abilities and overall happiness.

In conclusion, ensuring that your chicken coop is equipped with the essential items discussed in this guide is paramount for the health, comfort, and productivity of your flock.
